Subject: Monogram's Cowboy Failure
in 1937, Monogram re-emerged as an independant film company. The merger with Republic Pictures having been a failure from almost day one. Jack Randall was selected to be their first cowboy star. On paper he looked pretty good. The brother of Bob Livingston who was making a name for himself at the time at Republic. Jack Randall could sing too, but in the manner of Dick Foran, James Newill and Fred scott and was no threat to Gene Autry or later on Roy Rogers. Randall made 22 westerns between 1937 and 1940 and most went from bad to worse. This one is a cut above mainly due to the direction of J.P. McGowan and a cast of pros such as Fuzzy Knight, Budd Buster, Dick Alexander and Luana Walters.

Jack Randall was soon lost in a group of more popular western stars coming to Monogram from Grand National and others such as Tex Ritter, James Newill as "Renfrew Of The Royal Mounted', and Tim McCoy. His pictures were lucky to make back their negative cost. Newcomer Robert Tansey was in charge of producing a lot Randall's pictures and they were the worst of the lot.

This is a standard Saturday Matinee western and it has superior picture and sound quality in MPEG-4. Buffs may or may not care for this. Otheers may find it an interesting curio.
